A production order moves through several stages between creation and closure. Each is recorded as a status, and the status governs what can be done.
The sequence of statuses

What release does
- Enables printing of issue documents and picking lists
- Triggers the availability check, depending on configuration
- Allows confirmations to be entered
- Fixes the planned cost on the order
Availability checks

A shortfall can block release or merely warn. Blocking is usually preferable, since starting without materials only creates confusion.
Technical completion
TECO declares that production is finished, even where the planned quantity was not reached.
- Remaining component reservations disappear, so MRP stops planning for them
- Capacity requirements disappear
- The order becomes eligible for variance calculation
- Cost postings remain possible, so late charges are still accepted
Closing
CLSD means finished for accounting too, and blocks all further postings. Three conditions must hold.
- The status is TECO or DLV
- No open requisitions or purchase orders remain, as for external operations
- The order balance is zero, meaning settlement is complete
Attempting to close an order with a balance fails. Confirm settlement first; CO78 handles this in bulk.
Changing and deleting
Before release, quantity and dates can be changed freely and the order deleted. Once confirmations or issues exist, deletion is impossible; set a deletion flag and remove the order through archiving instead.
