CO (Controlling) is the accounting that supports decisions inside the business. Where FI produces reports for shareholders and tax authorities outside the company, CO answers the questions managers ask: what does this department cost, and is this product actually making money.
Most of the difficulty people have with CO comes from starting it without a clear picture of how it relates to FI. Both handle the same transactions, but they cut them differently. FI asks what was spent, by account. CO asks who spent it, by cost centre or order. One payroll payment is recorded by FI as five million yen of salary expense and by CO as three million to sales and two million to development. That dual view is what CO is.
